Marketing Books - In-depth Resources to Help You Do It YourselfIf you would like to learn more about marketing like the pros, here's a very short list of books I have read and recommend:What I am reading right now:
From the Product Description on Amazon: Sellers often don’t close
all of the sales they deserve to close. Why? The sales model itself fails to
address the off-line issues buyers must manage before making a buying
decision. Dirty Little Secrets takes the reader behind the scenes to
understand how buyers buy, and offers tools to help them. Dirty Little
Secrets exposes the problems with sales that have resulted in over 90%
failure rates, and offers front-end decision facilitation tools to mitigate
the failures. Until now, sales books have focused on helping buyers through
the solution-placement end of the buying decision. No other book takes the
seller through the behind-the-scenes issues that buyers must address before
they get buy-in for a solution. This is not a sales book, but a
sophisticated examination of systems, change, and decision making to help
sellers close more, find more prospects, and greatly minimize the sales
cycle. This book is essential for any serious student of sales. Do you want
to sell? Or have someone buy? - Sharon Drew Morgenm author of Selling with Integrity: Reinventing Sales Through Collaboration, Respect, and Serving College-level textbooks
Two Must-read Marketing BooksAl Ries and Jack Trout's 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing made a big impression on me back in the late 80s when it came out. I was seeing small businesses making alot of mistakes, but didn't have an easy reference to show them what they were doing wrong. Ries and Trout made it easy to see and help get them back on track. The subtitle is "Violate Them at Your Own Risk" and I've seen many companies waste their time and resources by not knowing these simple guidelines. You can argue whether marketing has LAWS in the same way as Physics or you can read and use this book to save you thousands of dollars. Seth Godin is still rockin' the business word with his insights into marketing behavior and how to serve your prospective customers. I was blown away by his simple insights. Read this and you'll see how much more effective your business can be in engaging your audience. So many business still just don't get it.... Permission marketing is on the bookshelf of ewvery sabby marketing consultant! Marketing for "Free" How do you create buzz in the marketplace? Everyone wants people to talk about their business in a positive way. Word of mouth is still the most effective form of marketing communication. Andy Sernovitz provides methods to get people talking about your business in a systematic way. This is a guide book to the free marketing you always wanted. Basics for Small Business Owners Jay Conrad Levinson has earned his place on the professional marketer's bookshelf through his Guerrilla Marketing series. For small business owners who feel strapped, especially start-up businesses, this book is a must-read. Loads of simple tactics you can use to start building your business without much of a marketing background. If you are just getting started in business, you need to use this book to generate some cash-flow before moving on to more sophisticated techniques. This one's for entrepreneurs who don't mind getting their hands dirty and building sweat-equity in their new venture. Dan Kennedy is the master pf writing copy that sells. His NO BS books on sales and marketing (and time management) come off my bookshelf on a regular basis. I wouldn't create a sales letter, website or marketing plan ( or phone pitch) without reading some of his work first. Really, these books do get dog-eared from use and every one of them has paid for itself. His No B.S. Direct Marketing is the first book I would recommend for anyone writing consumer or B2B copy.
